US Eagle Kyle Sumsion Signs with RUNY
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
2018 SABERCATS’ CAPTAIN SIGNS WITH RUNY
NEW YORK (November 13, 2018)- Rugby United New York is thrilled to announce the signing of US Eagle Kyle Sumsion. Before moving to New York, the versatile back row player captained the Houston Sabercats in the 2018 Major League Rugby season. Sumsion has made 5 appearances for the USA National team.
Sumsion, from Utah, began playing rugby in high school with the heralded United club. He continued his career at collegiate powerhouse Brigham Young University. He spent 5 years on the campus, winning a National Championship and earning All American honors each year. He was the team captain in 2014 and 2015, and coincidentally won the National Championship MVP during both of those campaigns.
Sumsion, US Eagle #450, made his national team debut while studying at BYU. His first appearance was during a Rugby World Cup qualifying match against Uruguay in late March of 2014. He has gone on to appear an additional 4 times for the squad. Sumsion joined the Sabercats in August of 2017, and captained the team throughout the inaugural season of Major League Rugby. While playing for RUNY, he will simultaneously act as an assistant coach for the United States Military Academy’s rugby program.
“We are very happy to welcome Kyle to RUNY,” General Manager James English told us. “His rugby speaks for itself, but it’s the character and leadership he brings that is most impressive. He is the sort of guy you follow into battle.”
“Kyle’s signing adds an important component to our team’s fabric,” added Head Coach Mike Tolkin. “He brings leadership, talent, and both international and MLR experience to the mix. He’s excelled at every stop, and we are excited to welcome him to New York.”
“I am excited to join RUNY for next season,” Sumsion said. “New York City not only has a great history of rugby, but also some of the best sports fans in the world. I am excited to play at MCU Park, and I expect us to be competing for the MLR Shield come June.”
New York City’s first professional rugby franchise will begin their Major League Rugby season on January 27, when they play the San Diego Legion at their home arena, Torero Stadium. The full 2019 schedule can be viewed here.

MLR is a professional rugby league that launched in April of 2018. It’s an initiative of the American rugby community, in partnership with private investors, who believe that American rugby can thrive at the highest levels: as a commercial enterprise; as an influential player on the international scene; and as a participation sport at the youth and senior level. MLR is the pinnacle of American rugby, and provides a rallying point for local communities, a focal point for American rugby fans, and an aspirational destination for young athletes.
