Rugby United New York Prop Chris Sullivan Announces Retirement
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NEW YORK (October 15, 2019)- Rugby United New York announced today the retirement of prop Chris Sullivan. Sullivan, originally from Louisville, Kentucky, was a mainstay for New Jersey’s Monmouth Rugby Club over the last 5 years. The prop first appeared for RUNY during their 2018 exhibition season before earning a contract for the 2019 Major League Rugby season.
Sullivan was a standout in both football and wrestling in high school before earning a scholarship to play football at Western Kentucky University. He earned All American football honors in 2006, his senior year, before turning to the rugby pitch in the spring of 2007. Sullivan went on to graduate with a degree in exercise science.
In 2008, Sullivan enrolled at Life University to pursue his Master’s degree in Exercise Science, as well as a Doctor of Chiropractic degree. He continued to play rugby while studying, and his strong play earned him selection onto the USA Selects side in October of 2013. After graduation from Life University, Sullivan continued playing rugby in the local community with both Old Blue and Monmouth Rugby Club.
Prior to the 2019 Major League Rugby season, the prop played in RUNY’s 2018 exhibition season against both the Toronto Arrows and the Boston Mystics. This past season, he earned 10 caps, totaling 270 minutes played. Sullivan landed 40 successful tackles while carrying the ball for 50 meters.
“Chris has done a tremendous service to this organization,” stated RUNY General Manager James English. “We will miss his veteran experience during the 2020 Major League Rugby season. We wish him nothing but the best as he enters a new phase of his life.”
“It was amazing to play with such a high caliber group of players here in the United States,” added Sullivan. “I got to do what every young athlete dreams about- I got paid to play the sport I love.”
