Rugby United New York Announces 2020 Major League Rugby Schedule

NEW YORK (September 23, 2019) – Rugby United New York has released their schedule for their upcoming 2020 Major League Rugby season. The season begins on Saturday, February 8th against expansion franchise New England Free Jacks, and concludes at home against the NOLA Gold in Week 17. For this 2020 season, Major League Rugby has added three new franchises to the league roster: ATL Rugby, the New England Freejacks and Old Glory DC. Rugby United New York will announce the venues for each match in the coming weeks. All times are EST and subject to change.
In Week 1, RUNY travels to Boston to take on one of the three newest additions to the MLR, the New England Freejacks. RUNY made their first introduction to the Freejacks during their 2018 preseason, narrowly beating the side. The match is set for Saturday, February 8th, with kickoff at 4:00 PM EST.
On February 15th, Rugby United New York will take on the Austin Herd at 12:00 PM EST. RUNY swept the series last season, winning both contests (19-11, 27-7.) Harry Bennett marshalled the backline from the fly half position during both contests in the 2019 season.
RUNY travels down to Atlanta on February 23rd for a match up against another expansion side, Rugby ATL. This will be the first ever meeting between the two clubs.
In Week 4, RUNY is in Houston against the Sabercats. RUNY defeated the Sabercats twice last year (35-8, 21-0). James Denise scored two tries in the opening match up against the Sabercats last year, igniting his try scoring performance that would be on show the rest of the season. The match kicks off at 8:00 PM on Saturday, February 29th.
RUNY travels to California to play against the San Diego Legion for their Week 5 match up. RUNY have played the legion 3 times in their Major League Rugby history, going 1-2, with the most recent match being a hard-fought loss in the 2019 Championship Series Semi-Finals. The match will be held on Sunday, March 8th, at 5:00 PM.
In Week 6, RUNY returns to New York to take on MLR 2018 & 2019 Champions, the Seattle Seawolves. RUNY and the Seattle Seawolves had two matches during the 2019 Season, with the Seawolves victorious in each match. During the first match, Chris Mattina carried the ball 156 meters and Ross Deacon had 16 ball carries. Mike Brown, Ross Deacon and Will Leonard each scored one try. In the second match, Dylan Fawsitt scored two tries and 10 points; with Paddy Ryan and Connor Wallace-Sims each scoring one try. The match will be held on Saturday, March 14th .
During week 7, RUNY hosts the Toronto Arrows. RUNY won the first match against the Arrows last season, 24-21, where Dylan Fawsitt scored two tries and 10 points. Nate Brakeley and John Quill each scored one try and five points, where Trevor Cassidy had a season-high 25 tackles. The match will be held on Sunday, March 22nd.
In Week 8, RUNY will travel to D.C. to play against Old Glory DC, the third new MLR franchise. The match will take place on Sunday, March 29th at 3:00pm.
The Roosters will utilize their bye week during Week 9.
In Week 10, RUNY is at home to play ATL Rugby for the second time in the 2020 season. The match will take place Friday, April 10th after a week off for the Roosters.
RUNY travels to New Orleans to face NOLA Gold in week 11. RUNY swept the two-match series last year. In the first match, Cathal Marsh scored 17 points and earned MLR Player of the Week honors. The match will take place on Saturday, April 18th at 4:00pm.
In Week 12, RUNY returns home against the Glendale Raptors. Last season, RUNY faced the Glendale Raptors twice, one victory 31-19 and one loss 20-16. In the first match, Mark O’Keefe scored two tries for 10 points. The match will be held on Saturday, April 25th.
In Week 14, RUNY is home to play against Old Glory DC for a second time. The match will be held on Saturday, May 9th.
RUNY travels to Utah in Week 15 for a match up with the Utah Warriors. RUNY was victorious in both matches last season, 47-21 and 24-22. In the first match, Connor Wallace-Sims and Mark O’Keefe each scored two tries, with Nate Brakeley completing 16 tackles. In the second match, Dylan Fawsitt, Connor Wallace Sims and John Quill together score four tries and 20 points. Alexander MacDonald, Dylan Fawsitt and Mark O’Keefe each broke one tackle. The match will be held on Saturday, May 16th at 7:00pm.
In Week 16, RUNY plays against the Toronto Arrows. RUNY lost the second match against Toronto by two points, 22-20. John Quill and Michael St. Claire each scored one try along with Cathal Marsh, who scored 10 points. Connor Wallace-Sims had 11 ball carries for a total of 112 meters. John Quill made 19 tackles. The match will take place on Friday, May 22nd at 7:00pm.
In Week 17, RUNY’s final game of the season is at home against NOLA Gold. In RUNY’s second match against NOLA Gold last season, Dylan Fawsitt and Matt Hughston each scored one try and Cathal Marsh scored 7 points. John Quill had 16 ball carries and Ben Foden carried the ball 93 meters. The match takes place on Saturday, May 30th.
