Six Rugby United New York Athletes Selected in USA World Cup Training Squad
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NEW YORK (June 13, 2019)- Rugby United New York, New York City’s professional rugby franchise, is thrilled to announce the selection of six of our athletes into USA Rugby’s preliminary training squad for the 2019 Rugby World Cup. The preliminary squad, consisting of 50 athletes, will begin their preparations for the quadrennial tournament when 40 of the 50 selected athletes report to camp next week.
Nate Brakeley, Lock, has made 18 appearances for the “Eagles”, USA Rugby’s Nickname, thus far in his test match career. He played in 15 games for the Roosters this year, logging over 1,100 minutes. He finished the season with over 225 tackles, among the league’s best, with 13 of them considered a dominant tackle. If selected, this would be his first Rugby World Cup.
Ross Deacon, Number 8, is among the four (Hattingh, Pinkleman, Fa’anana-Schultz) uncapped athletes selected. He suited up for 13 games this season after battling with injuries throughout the latter half of the campaign. He carried for over 650 meters on less than 100 carries while completing over 92% of his tackles. Deacon will not assemble for the camp at this time.
Dylan Fawsitt, Hooker, is looking to build on the 8 caps he has for the Eagles. The RUNY Vice-Captain had a banner year for the organization, finishing with a league-leading 13 tries. The tries were a combination of his hard work in the loose, coupled with a dangerous maul attack that sprung from a strong lineout platform. He was a force on the defensive side of the ball as well, amassing over 170 tackles.
Mike Petri, Scrumhalf, is the lone Rugby United New York back selected in the preliminary squad. The veteran is the most capped USA back of all time, amassing 57 of the course of his international career. A strong season, which saw him compete in all 17 matches, proved that he still has what it takes to compete at a high level. Like Deacon, Petri will not assemble with the camp at this time.
John Quill, Flanker, is the most experienced RUNY athlete selected for the camp starting next week. The flanker has earned 33 caps for the Eagles, which is good for 6 most out of the 50 athletes. The hard charging Rooster appeared in 12 matches this Major League Rugby season, scoring 4 tries in addition to completing over 87% of his tackles.
Paddy Ryan, Prop, is the last RUNY athlete to be selected for the preliminary squad. The forward, born in Chicago and raised in Ireland, has appeared for the national side 4 times. He was an important piece of the RUNY scrum this season, logging over 700 minutes over the course of 13 games.
Good luck to the Rugby United New York athletes represented. We will all be following very closely.
