Rugby United New York Signs Luke Hume
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
US EAGLE #428, LUKE HUME, SIGNS WITH RUGBY UNITED NEW YORK
NEW YORK (October 1st, 2018)- New York City’s first professional rugby franchise, Rugby United New York, has signed veteran Luke Hume for the 2019 Major League Rugby season. The USA International, in both 7s and 15s, started two matches for RUNY in the 2018 exhibition season.
At the age of 18, Hume began his professional rugby career in Australia. Between 2006 and 2009, he spent time with two rugby league teams, the North Queensland Cowboys and the Cronulla Sharks. He came to New York City in 2009 to join the surging amateur rugby league team, the New York Knights. He led them to a club championship in his first year with the squad.
Hume then moved to Old Blue RFC, and the United States National team began to take notice of the young Australian star. In 2012, he scored a try on debut for the Eagles against rivals Canada. He made his first appearance for the National 7s team in 2012 as well. Since that time, he has appeared 26 times for the 15s team, and has played in 9 competitions for the 7s program.
Hume’s play on the international scene had clubs from around the world taking notice. He earned a contract with Gloucester Rugby, of England’s Gallagher Premiership as well as RC Narbonne, of France’s Top 14. Hume then returned to New York City and has been a spark plug for Old Blue ever since.
“Luke brings character, huge energy, and he has the X factor,” RUNY General Manager James English said. “He has played in professional environments across the world, and loves to win. He will be a great addition to our squad.”
“Luke has been, and continues to be, one of the most dangerous and exciting attackers in the game,” Head Coach Mike Tolkin said. “He has the ability to create opportunities from nothing. His passion for the game, and for playing in New York City, brings great energy to our squad. His years of success at every level of the game are invaluable to us.”
“I’m expecting a very competitive 2019 Major League Rugby season,” Hume told us. “I thought last season was a great opportunity for the Greater New York Area to showcase our talent. I’m looking forward to that opportunity again.”
Hume is the latest US Eagle to sign for RUNY. This past week, the signing of Lock Nate Brakeley was announced. In total, the organization boasts over 90 caps of international experience through the 6 announced signings.
