2020 ROSTER GROWS WITH MORE RE-SIGNINGS
NEW YORK (December 3, 2019)- New York City’s professional rugby franchise revealed today an additional 4 athletes from the 2019 squad will be returning for their second season in Major League Rugby. These athletes join an ever-growing RUNY outfit that is in the midst of preparation for their 2020 MLR campaign, set to kick off in February.
Sumsion, Flanker, signed with Rugby United New York prior to the 2019 Major League Rugby season after captaining the Houston Sabercats in the inaugural year of MLR. The former BYU All-American earned 10 caps in his first season as a Rooster, making his debut as a starting flanker in the season opener against the San Diego Legion. He was on the field for a total of 467 minutes, but Sumsion made the most of it, running for over 300 meters on his 67 carries. The capped Eagle is currently acting as an Assistant Coach for the Army West Point Men’s Rugby Team.
Marsh, Fly Half, was the leading point scorer for RUNY in their inaugural Major League Rugby season. The Leinster product earned 14 caps (955 minutes), debuting against the San Diego Legion in Week 1. He was a catalyst for the Rooster attack, creating line breaks (5), breaking tackles (5), and making territory on the ground (629 meters). Marsh was also a leader on defense with successfully completing 119 tackles. He joins Harry Bennett as the Fly Halves signed on for the 2020 season.
Leonard, Center, returns to New York after being a main feature in the midfield during the 2019 season. The hard charging Irishman earned 12 caps in his rookie season, appearing for 869 minutes in the Number 12 shirt. He caused the opposition nightmares with his defense, finishing with 140 tackles- good enough to be in the Roosters’ Top 5. Leonard made them pay with his feet as well, running for 750 meters on 109 carries. He finished the season with two tries, scoring one a piece in each of the matchups with the Seattle Seawolves.
Morrison, Wing, converted to the position after spending most of his collegiate and club career in the Back Row. The physical Old Blue product used his raw athleticism to hop ahead a few spaces in the depth chart and he earned 9 caps in his first year playing professional rugby. Although his time was limited (210 minutes), he still managed to carry for nearly 150 meters, while successfully landing 17 tackles. The versatile athlete recently appeared for the USA National 7s team this fall.
