5 ATHLETES CONFIRM THEIR RETURN TO RUGBY UNITED NEW YORK
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NEW YORK (November 20, 2019)- Rugby United New York confirmed today that five additional athletes have re-signed with the organization. The announcement continues a busy offseason for the New York City based franchise that is entering its second year in Major League Rugby.
This group joins 10 athletes that have already confirmed their return to New York City prior to the 2020 Major League Rugby season.
Parry, Prop, made his debut for RUNY in the 2019 MLR season opener against the San Diego Legion. The New York City rugby veteran appeared in every match of the regular season campaign, earning 16 caps and totaling 472 minutes on the field. He completed 78 tackles successfully, while carrying for 201 meters on 55 carries. Parry joins confirmed re-signee James Rochford in the growing front row.
Walsh, Scrum Half, made his RUNY debut in Week 4 of the 2019 MLR season, coming off the bench against the New Orleans Gold in the 73rd minute. The Irish born tactician was a spark plug for the side in his 13 appearances (248 minutes) over the course of the year, regularly providing relief for veteran Mike Petri. He marshaled the attack with both his kicking (296 meters on 11 kicks) and running (99 meters on 12 carries) abilities. He scored one try for the Roosters during the 2019 campaign. Walsh joins Petri and new signee Jason Higgins as the backline operators for the 2020 MLR season.
Bennett, Fly Half, first appeared for the Roosters as a replacement in the March 24th clash against the Glendale Raptors. The Australian born out half earned a call up to the US National Team’s “Selects” side in September of 2018. However, injuries forced his exclusion on the tour and ultimately delayed his start to the MLR season. After a grueling rehabilitation process, Bennett worked his way into the RUNY lineup, earning 9 caps and totaling 279 minutes. He scored 9 points from shots at the posts, while kicking from hand for 480 meters, and gaining another 50 meters on his 7 carries.
Wirken, Lock, began his professional rugby career with the New Orleans Gold during the 2018 Major League Rugby season. The 6’7 Kansas City native joined the Roosters the following offseason. He made his RUNY debut when he came off the bench against his former club during the Week 4 matchup in Louisiana. Wirken spent 163 minutes on the field in his 8 appearances, completing 22 tackles and carrying the ball for 43 meters. The towering lock is currently working as a model, appearing for a variety of brands all across the United States. He joins fellow returnees Nate Brakeley and Trevor Cassidy, as well as 2020 signee Cormac Daly, in the club’s engine room.
Brown, Hooker, competed with the Austin Elite (now Herd) during the 2018 Major League Rugby season after an impressive 2018 RUNY exhibition season. The former Collegiate All-American signed back with the NYC franchise prior to 2019’s kickoff, adding depth and experience to the front row. He was on the field for 174 minutes in his 7 earned caps, debuting against the New Orleans Gold in Week 4. He scored 1 try, carried for 54 meters, and made 14 tackles.
