Preseason Rolls on: New York Barbarians Up Next
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NEW YORK (January 28, 2020) – Rugby United New York, New York City’s professional rugby franchise, confirmed today their second test of the 2020 Major League Rugby preseason. The Roosters line up against the New York Barbarians, an invitational side, this upcoming Saturday at 3:30 PM. Wagner College Football Stadium hosts the match.
Last weekend, RUNY met the Toronto Arrows for a joint training session in the ADPro Training Center. After trading repetitions through live drills, the day ended with a physical scrimmage. It was a valuable opportunity for the coaching staff, watching their team against opposition for the first time. With less than two weeks until the season begins, Saturday is one of the last assessment opportunities for Head Coach McWilliams.
The New York Barbarians, an invitational side, is comprised of MLR prospects throughout the greater NYC area. Coach McWilliams identified these athletes after calling to coaches for local nominations. By creating this side, RUNY shows their commitment to growing the game in the local community. After fielding two developmental sides last spring, the organization continues to build out a clear development pathway for local athletes.
Time is of the essence for the Roosters. In 12 days, they kick off their 2020 season against the New England Free Jacks. Position battles across the field leaves a level of uncertainty as to who makes the flight to Las Vegas. For athletes on the bubble, Saturday is likely one of the last chances to stick their hand up for selection.
The game kicks off at 3:30 PM, this Saturday, in the Wagner College football stadium. Admission for the event is free.
