Midweek Practice Report: Preseason Week 1
BY ANDREW NEWMAN
NEW YORK, NY- Rugby United New York has enjoyed a fast-paced start to the 2020 Major League Rugby campaign during their first taste of preseason. The theme of the week has been change: new coaches, new facilities, and a new start for the Roosters.
“The start of preseason has been great,” 2019 Rugby United New York captain Mike Petri told RUNY staff. “There’s a good buzz within the team, and we are getting a lot accomplished together at our sessions.”
To begin the week, the team assembled Monday afternoon for strength testing- the norm for any typical preseason grind. Strength testing continued into Tuesday afternoon’s gym session as well.
“We tested our one repetition bench press, squats, and weighted pull ups,” versatile RUNY forward Alex MacDonald explained. “The Strength and Conditioning team will take those numbers and custom tailor a program for each individual athlete, as opposed to creating a blanket program for the entire team to follow.”
The field sessions focused on laying the foundation for their attacking platform. Head Coach Greg McWilliams plans to play at a more heightened pace than last season. He has been stressing clarity over roles and expectations during this early stage of the camp. The athletes have responded well to the change of playing style. In addition to that, they have been smoothly acclimating to the new coaching staff and their philosophies.
“Having new players and a new coaching staff hasn’t been as big of a speed bump as some may have thought,” MacDonald continued. “It’s been great having everybody back and getting into the rhythm again. These are exciting times for the franchise.”
The athletes are enjoying a well-deserved Wednesday off before finishing the first official week of preseason with three consecutive training days.
