CAL RUGBY STAR TROY LOCKYEAR SIGNS WITH RUGBY UNITED NEW YORK
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NEW YORK (November 19, 2019)- New York City’s professional rugby franchise, Rugby United New York, announced today the signing of 23-year-old Troy Lockyear. The fullback (6’2, 195 pounds) begins his professional rugby career after an impressive tenure with the Golden Bears at the University of California.
Lockyear (Heversham, England) grew up a multi-sport athlete, competing in rugby, soccer, cricket, and track and field. He excelled in rugby, earning the Vice-Captaincy of the Senior team at Eton College. Lockyear’s play on the pitch brought him to the Premiership’s Wasps’ Academy, where he started at fullback for the club. His impressive performances began to mount up, and the young playmaker earned county representative honors from 2010- 2015.
After impressing the Golden Bears’ coaching staff at Cal’s Varsity Rugby camp, Lockyear committed to the Berkeley based rugby powerhouse to continue his academic and athletic career. The rangy fullback arrived on campus in the fall of 2015 and was expected to make an immediate impact. However, untimely injuries throughout his first two seasons limited his playing time.
Lockyear was able to stay healthy his last two years on campus, starting at both Fly Half and Fullback for the Golden Bears. He proved that when consistently fit, he was one of the most dangerous players in the collegiate rugby landscape. He led the team to back-to-back National Championship appearances before graduating from the prestigious university with a degree in Philosophy.
In 2019, Lockyear was honored with First Team Collegiate All-American honors in both 15s and 7s. The new Rooster joins Robert Irimescu as a member of that All-American roster to sign with Rugby United New York prior to the 2020 Major League Rugby season.
“I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to represent Rugby United New York, the city, and its fans,” shared Lockyear. “RUNY has established itself as a frontrunner within Major League Rugby. I am extremely excited to become part of the team and help the organization progress.”
“I have watched Troy over the last number of seasons playing with Cal, mainly at 15, but he can play both 10 & 13 as well,” RUNY Head Coach Greg McWilliams told us. “It was great to spend time with him while the All Americans were in camp last June. I had the chance to watch him against the Eagles at training- he has a very solid skill set and is a smart player. We all look forward to working with Troy. He is a great man that will contribute a lot to our club.”
