RUGBY UNITED NEW YORK ADDS ALL-IRELAND LEAGUE CHAMPION SCRUM-HALF
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NEW YORK (November 5, 2019)- Rugby United New York is pleased to announce the signing of Irish scrum-half Jason Higgins for the 2020 Major League Rugby season. The Cork, Ireland native has played with Cork Constitution for the past five years, winning multiple All-Ireland League championships. The 26-year-old recently earned his Master’s Degree in Business Economics at the University of College Cork.
Higgins started his career at the age of 6, joining Cork Constitution’s youth rugby program. From 2008 until 2014, the scrum-half attended Christian Brothers College. Consistent strong performances earned him a spot with Munster’s Under 20 team, as well as Munster A, their developmental side. In 2014, Higgins was awarded the Player of the Year in his last season with the club.
After Christian Brothers, Higgins attended college at Cork Constitution and played on their senior side. The team competed in the Munster Senior Cup, winning the competition in 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2019. In 2017 and 2019, Higgins helped Cork Constitution win the All Ireland League Championship.
“It’s a massive honor to play a game I love for such an incredible city,” Higgins told us. “I’m really excited to get going with the RUNY lads as we prepare for the new Major League Rugby season.”
“It’s exciting for RUNY to get a player of Jason’s pedigree,” added RUNY Head Coach Greg McWilliams. “He has an excellent skillset. Our goal is to maximize his potential by having him compete with two top class 9s in Mike Petri and Marcus Walsh.”
Rugby United New York opens up the 2020 Major League Rugby season against the New England Free Jacks on Sunday, February 9th, at 4:00 PM EST. Ticketing options for this match will be made available in the coming weeks.
