INTERNATIONAL RUGBY STAR SET TO VISIT NEW YORK CITY NEXT WEEK
NEW YORK (June 6, 2019)- Rugby United New York, New York City’s professional rugby franchise, announced today that Mathieu Bastareaud, the French international rugby star, will be visiting his new club next week, with an arrival date of June 11.
Bastareaud announced in April that he would be leaving his French club, Toulon, after spending eight years with the organization and amassing over 200 appearances. The hard charging center is expected to appear for France in this fall’s Rugby World Cup, and will join the New York City club after its conclusion, likely moving state-side in December.
Since making his debut for the French national team in 2009, “Basta” has made over 50 appearances representing his country, most recently during the 2019 6 Nations Championship, when he faced off against rivals Italy, Ireland, England, and France. He has captained the side on three occasions as well.
Mathieu will be visiting New York City next week, along with Rugby United New York’s CEO Pierre Arnald, in hopes of starting the daunting acclimation process as soon as possible. During his time in the city, the center will be training regularly, as well as meeting with various media pundits that have expressed interest in Major League Rugby’s biggest signing to date.
After a strong regular season that saw RUNY go 11-5, the New York franchise clinched a playoff berth in the last week of the competition. San Diego, Seattle, and Toronto will join the Blue & Orange in the “Quest for the Shield,” beginning this Sunday at 5 PM EST. Fans based in America will be able to tune in LIVE on CBS Sports Network for the full broadcast, while fans based around the world can stream the game via the USMLR Facebook page.
