McWilliams Names Weekend’s Roster
Week Four of the Major League Rugby season has arrived. Greg McWilliams announced his team to travel down to Houston and take on the Sabercats in MLR’s Game of the Week. Fans can tune in live to CBS Sports Network on Sunday at 6 PM EST.
The tight five remains unchanged from last week. The front row trio of Rochford, Fawsitt, and Ryan had a productive day around the park against ATL. Both Rochford and Fawsitt earned MLR 1st XV honors for their efforts on the day. Nate Brakeley and recent signee Charlie Hewitt make their second appearance as the engine room combination. Brakeley is having a monster season, he also appeared on the 1st XV, earning the honor the second consecutive week.
US Eagle Hanco Germishuys makes his first start as a Rooster as the blindside flanker. He’ll be working with Jimmy Denise and Mathieu Bastareaud in the back-row. Basta had the best performance of his young RUNY career against Atlanta in Week Three. The Frenchman ran for over 100 meters, broke one tackle, got two offloads off, and made 18 tackles (completing 95% of his attempts 18/19). He was the fourth Rooster forward to earn MLR 1st XV honors last week.
The forward reserves include veteran leadership in front row players Mike Brown, Anthony Parry, and Kirk Hamilton. Hamilton made his first appearance of the season in last week’s win. After one week off, second row Matt Wirken is back on the roster. Rookie Robert Irimescu is the back-row cover making the trip to Houston.
Veteran Mike Petri makes his first start of the season, swapping duties with Marcus Walsh who is now in the reserves. The native New Yorker will be working with Cathal Marsh on the day. The two paired together in the majority of RUNY matches last season. Harry Bennett provides relief off the bench. The NYAC veteran has proven his versatility this season, already slotting in at multiple positions. Speaking of versatility…
For the first time in Chris Mattina’s RUNY career, he starts in the same position for the third consecutive game. He has worked well from the inside center position early on in the year. After a two a game suspension, Will Leonard returns, pairing with Mattina in the centers.
Connor Wallace Sims and Ben Foden find themselves at their usual home on the left wing and fullback, respectively. Quentin Pradere makes his first career MLR start on the right wing. He appeared off the bench in Weeks Two and Three. JP Aguirre rounds out the 23 man roster and has the opportunity to earn his first RUNY cap this weekend.
