A MESSAGE FROM HARRY BENNETT ON AUSTRALIAN BUSHFIRES
Australia is experiencing an alarming outbreak of bushfires along the East Coast. The country has been battling these fires for the past five months, with the most devastating and intense fires affecting New South Wales and Victoria over the last two months. These areas are predominantly coastal and rural areas, with the residents relying on the land to make their living. Residents have lost their homes and all their possessions, forced to evacuate elsewhere to safety. To date, 24 people have been killed and 2,000 homes have been destroyed by these bushfires.
RUNY Fly Half Harry Bennett was born and raised in Hunter Valley in New South Wales. His family, along with many of his neighbors and friends, are farmers who have been severely impacted by these fires. Not only have they lost their homes, but they also lost their jobs. After recovering from this horrific, life-altering experience, these residents will be forced to start their lives all over again. In an effort to help their community, Harry’s family has opened up their home to anyone who’s lost theirs to the bushfires until they can get back on their feet.
“This loss is devastating to these farmers, but it goes beyond physical possessions and livestock,” Harry shared. “There’s the emotional aftermath of suffering through this tragedy, seeing your home and all your memories go up in flames that will follow the residents long after the fires are put out.”
In an effort to help those affected by these bushfires, Harry wants to encourage those who can to donate to New South Wales Rural Fire Service to help the local firefighters combat and contain these bushfires. This organization has served his local community for over 100 years, responding to fires, motor vehicle accidents and storms. It is the leading agency for bushfires in New South Wales and the largest volunteer fire service in the world with over 72,000 volunteers.
