Five RUNY Athletes Earn Major League Rugby Honors
FIVE RUNY ATHLETES EARN MAJOR LEAGUE RUGBY HONORS
NEW YORK (June 25, 2019)- Major League Rugby (MLR) officially announced its award winners and All-MLR team selections for the 2019 season on Tuesday. Rugby United New York is proud to announce five of our athletes were selected on the All-MLR teams. The selections were voted on by members of the MLR media.
Hooker Dylan Fawsitt earned First XV honors for the season. The physical front rower played in 15 matches for the Roosters over the course of the season, logging over 1,100 minutes in total. He made 170 tackles, at a 92% completion rate, while leading the league in tries with 13. “The Butcher” was recently selected for USA Rugby’s World Cup training squad and has the opportunity to play in his first World Cup this fall.
Lock Nate Brakeley joins Fawsitt in the First XV’s forward pack. The standout from Massachusetts logged over 1200 minutes in 15 matches. The lock led the defense with 238 tackles, which good enough for 2nd in the league. In addition to his defensive prowess, Brakeley was the main weapon for the RUNY lineout. His number was called upon 50 times, which was 5th most in the league. Like Fawsitt, he earned selection to the World Cup training squad for the Eagles.
Wing Connor Wallace-Sims rounds out the Roosters in the First XV. This season he scored 48 points, which landed him in the top 15 across the league. The playmaker had a knack for finding the try line, finishing in the top 5 for tries scored with 8 over the course of the year. He ran for over 750 meters on the ground while completing 60 tackles.
Flanker Matt Hughston enjoyed a late season surge to earn his spot on MLR’s Second XV. The back rower was on the pitch for 900+ minutes this season over the span of 16 games. The Charlotte native made over 150 tackles on defense, as well contributing for over 600 meters on 125 carries. This is Hughston’s second consecutive All MLR selection, earning Second XV honors in 2018 with the NOLA Gold.
Scrum half Mike Petri, the RUNY captain, is the last of the RUNY athletes to earn MLR honors. The 34-year-old came out of “retirement” to play for his home town team, and did not miss a match. The veteran logged over 1100 minutes and completed over 150 tackles. He managed to find the try line 3 times and kicked for over 1600 meters, good for third on the team. His resurgence landed him on the expanded World Cup training squad for USA Rugby. If he earns selection, it would be his 4th World Cup.
Congrats to the five RUNY athletes selected after an outstanding season. You can find the full team selections below.
