RUNY STAR, DYLAN “THE BUTCHER” FAWSITT, PUTS PEN TO PAPER
NEW YORK (December 19, 2019)- Rugby United New York announced today that star Hooker, Dylan “the Butcher” Fawsitt, agreed to terms and has re-signed with the Roosters ahead of the 2020 Major League Rugby campaign. His commitment is a seminal moment in the club’s offseason after the 29-year-old emerged as one of the competition’s top players last season.
Fawsitt (Rooster #3, 15 caps) served as RUNY’s captain during their 2018 undefeated exhibition season. He then travelled west to spend the 2018 MLR season with the Glendale (now Colorado) Raptors. After one season as a Raptor, Butcher returned to New York to compete with in the blue & orange for the 2019 season.
The Wexford, Ireland man acted as the Vice-Captain last season, debuting in the year’s opener against the San Diego Legion. Butcher was sensational all season long, leading the league in tries scored (13) and finishing second on the team in successful tackles (170). He spent 1,174 minutes on the field, good enough to land in the top five out of the RUNY athletes. The impressive year earned him Major League Rugby 1st XV honors at the conclusion of the season.
RUNY’s first MLR season ended in a heart-breaking Semi-Final loss, but international honors were on the horizon for Fawsitt. After a few grueling months of preparation, he earned selection to the Rugby World Cup with the United States National team. It was a “dream come true” for Butcher and he went on to appear in three out of the United States’ four matches. To date, he has earned 15 caps for the Eagles.
“Being selected for the World Cup is certainly the pinnacle in our sport,” Fawsitt shared. “It was a goal I set out to achieve as kid, I’ve always wanted to play in the biggest games and competitions.”
He is optimistic ahead of the 2020 season. 2019 challenged the team in many different ways, but upon reflection, it now provides the Roosters with both insight and experience. He looks forward to starting the 2020 season in a familiar environment, while understanding the need to adapt to the offseason changes the club made. These include a new coaching staff, an upgraded RUNY training facility, and a different competition format, among others. However, while it is a new staff, Fawsitt has worked with both Head Coach McWilliams and Assistant Coach Veale in the past, with the United States National Team and Old Blue, respectively.
“The team is in the best hands for the new season,” Butcher told us. “They will challenge us to strive for greatness at every practice and every match.”
“Dylan brings a constant positive energy to the clubhouse,” Greg McWilliams added. “His infectious work ethic is needed for a competition that requires endurance and mental resolve.”
