IRISH SECOND ROW CORMAC DALY SIGNS WITH RUGBY UNITED NEW YORK
NEW YORK (November 8, 2019) – Rugby United New York is thrilled to announce the signing of Second Row Cormac Daly ahead of the 2020 Major League Rugby season. The 6’6, 250-pound Kildare, Ireland native has represented both Leinster and Connacht in their development programs.
As a multi-sport athlete from a young age, Daly excelled in both rugby and Gaelic Football. He grew up featuring for Kilcock GAA, playing from the underage level all the way to their senior team, reaching the Intermediate Championship.
His success in Gaelic football naturally translated to rugby and he began to excel on the pitch. In 2017, Daly won the Under-20 All Ireland competition with Navan. Leinster saw the potential in the young Second Row and invited Daly to represent the club from Under-18s all the way through Under-20s, eventually appearing for Leinster A, their development team.
His raw athleticism, coupled with his height and power, was noticed by age-grade Ireland national team selectors. In 2017, Daly represented his home country in the 2017 Junior World Cup. After strong performances in that tournament, Daly was brought back for the 2018 Under-20 Six Nations tournament. The following summer, he returned to play for the Ireland U-20s in his last Junior World Cup. Most recently, Daly has been featuring for Connacht’s development team, Connacht A.
“It’s a huge opportunity to represent one of the biggest cities in the world,” the 21-year-old Daly shared. “I’m looking forward to immersing myself into the culture that New York and RUNY have to offer.”
“Cormac is one of the best young second rows in Ireland,” Head Coach Greg McWilliams continued. “I believe, for the style we’re trying to play, and the level of competition in the MLR, Cormac is going to be very important to Rugby United New York.”
