This is CommRUNYity Report, where we share how our Community Outreach Program is spreading rugby and the RUNY values in and around New York City schools and rugby clubs!
It was another busy week for the Community Outreach Team. Team Manager Simon Gillespie was working on 2020 MLR Season logistics (yay!) so Alex visited Brooklyn Tech, British International School and Fordham Prep.
“I love Brooklyn Tech,” shared Alex. “They pick up on drills and shape quickly and that’s why they’re so great to coach. Their understanding of the game has grown exponentially.”
Alex helped prepare the Engineers for the upcoming 7s tournament. He coached the team through drills that taught them how to spread the field and maintain shape.
At the British International School, Alex worked with a group of elementary students, teaching simple hands with a focus on communication and finding space.
“They were so excited to see me,” said Alex. “They were waving their hands as soon as they saw me and that made it more enjoyable.”
The students were thrilled to be rewarded with RUNY stickers at the end of the session. They wanted Alex to come back with “more friends” and even demanded tickets to a game next season.
“Well, at least they love the stickers,” shared Coach Tim Ferguson.
At Fordham Prep, the team had their first preseason meeting. Alex was joined by fellow RUNY Athlete Harry Bennett for a classroom discussion on the positive impact of rugby culture and the “Ramily” of Fordham Prep Rugby.
Thank you, Brooklyn Tech, British International School and Fordham Prep for having us! We hope you enjoyed the sessions and can’t wait to see you at RUNY match during the 2020 Major League Rugby Season!
