Argentinian Center JP Aguirre Signs with Rugby United New York
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NEW YORK (September 26, 2019)- Rugby United New York announced today the signing of center Juan Pablo “JP” Aguirre for the 2020 Major League Rugby season. The 25-year-old from Buenos Aires, Argentina signed with Rugby United New York after spending his rookie MLR season with the Austin Herd.
Aguirre started playing rugby at 12-years-old with his hometown club, Club Champagnat. He grew up with the club before playing provincial rugby for the Under-18s. His strong play there earned the center selection onto the Argentinian U-20 team, Los Pumitas. He appeared for Los Pumitas in the 2013 Junior Rugby World Cup, beating Scotland and Samoa in pool play before narrowly falling to the Welsh Under-20s. Los Pumitas ended up finishing sixth in the tournament. In 2014, he won the Sudamerica Championship with the Under 20 team, beating Uruguay, Chile and Brazil .
Aguirre moved to New York before attending the University of Lindenwood-Belleville , then transferring to the school’s main campus, Lindenwood University. He was a key player in the team’s 7s National Championship run in 2018. He earned 2nd XV honors for the Mid-South Conference during the 2017-2018 D1A season. He was selected for the Collegiate Rugby Championships’ Dream Team at the conclusion of the season.
After competing at the World Rugby combine held in Glendale, Colorado in October of 2018, Aguirre signed with the Austin Elite, now Herd, ahead of the 2019 Major League Rugby season. The center was a spark plug on a struggling team. He joins Rugby United New York for the 2020 Major League Rugby season.
“JP adds a lot of value to our back line,” stated James English, RUNY General Manager. “He had impressive moments in Austin last season, but we are expecting even more out of him during his second season in Major League Rugby.”
“Last season, RUNY showed everyone that they could be one of the best teams in the league,” added JP Aguirre. “This season, we have to show everyone that we are the best and end up with the shield in NYC.”
Rugby United New York released their 2020 Major League Rugby schedule this past Monday, revealing they will open the season against expansion franchise New England Free Jacks on Saturday, February 8th at 4:00 PM EST.
