Chris Mattina is Coming Home

NEW YORK (December 3, 2018)- Rugby United New York is thrilled to announce the signing of New Yorker Chris Mattina. The versatile back just finished competing with the US National 7s team, appearing in 8 tournaments since the start of 2018. The Xavier high school product, born and raised in Manhattan’s Upper East Side, returns to his hometown in order to compete in our inaugural Major League Rugby season.

Mattina started playing under Mike Tolkin while at Manhattan’s Xavier High School. In 2010, Mattina helped the Knights to a high school national championship, earning MVP honors. He continued his career at the University of Delaware. He was a three-time captain, and led the team throughout multiple Collegiate Rugby Championship runs.

After graduation, Mattina had a brief stint with Wilmington RFC, based out of Pennsylvania, before returning to New York. He joined New York Athletic Club’s rugby program, and helped them reach a National Championship in 2017. His strong play throughout the season, and his showings in high performance camps, earned him a contract with the USA 7s team. He made his debut during Sydney Sevens this past January.

“This past year with USA 7s has been unbelievable for my development,” Mattina told us. “But, I watched the championship game in San Diego last season, and I knew that I had to play in Major League Rugby. I want New York to play an exciting brand of rugby, and I expect us to be a playoff contender.”

"We are excited to bring Chris home to New York,” General Manager James English said. “He’s been immersed in a professional environment with the 7s team, and we are looking forward to benefitting from his experience there.”

“Chris is a talented and versatile player who is in his prime right now," added Head Coach Mike Tolkin "Being a part of the recent 7s Rugby World Cup squad brings him in top form, and I know he is excited to get back into the XVs game in his home city."

Welcome home, Chris. Time to get to work.
