FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

2018 All MLR Flanker Matt Hughston Signs with RUNY

NEW YORK (October 29, 2018)- New York City’s first professional rugby team is excited to announce the signing of flanker Matt Hughston. Hughston was a key member of the New Orleans Gold in 2018, garnering Second Team All-MLR honors in the inaugural season. Hughston recently captained the New England Free Jacks, slated to join Major League Rugby in 2020, in an exhibition match.

Hughston, from Charlotte, North Carolina, started playing rugby in 2007, during his senior year at Providence High School. After graduation, he thought about walking on to the football team at East Carolina University, but decided to continue playing rugby. In 2009, he was part of the USA Under 20 team that won silver in the Junior World Trophy held in Kenya. He was selected as a Men’s Collegiate All American twice, as well as earning selection onto the Collegiate All-South XVs team.

After graduating ECU, Hughston joined Charlotte Rugby Football Club and continued to impress with his athleticism and physical style of play. He has been called into multiple training camps with the USA national team, in both codes of the game. He was a 2016 Olympic hopeful, participating in multiple 7s High Performance camps. He has toured with both the USA South men’s sevens and fifteens programs, while serving as captain. In 2017, he joined fellow RUNY player Connor Wallace-Sims on the USA Falcons tour of South America.

Hughston was a dominant force in the inaugural season of Major League Rugby, earning 2nd team all MLR honors at the end of the season. He was selected to the “Team of the Week” 4 times over the course of the 8-week season. He was largely recognized as one of the most imposing back-row players in the league.

“It was a great inaugural year for MLR,” Hughston told us. “I enjoyed my time down in the swamps and the special people who took me into the NOLA family. I’m excited to have a chance to play with the country’s top players here in New York. I know the skill on our roster will allow us to play expansive, fast rugby, and our depth will allow us to make it through a long season.”

“His physicality, coupled with his rugby IQ and ball skills, make him a very versatile back row player,” said General Manager James English. “He fits in very nicely with the style of play we are looking to implement.”

"I watched Matt play some very good rugby last season," added Head Coach Mike Tolkin. "I'm excited to have him on board, and to be working with him for the first time. We expect him to bring high energy, competitiveness, and great athleticism to our back row."

Welcome to New York, Matt.
